Home Schooling
Parents have the legal right to choose to educate their children at home rather than sending them to public schools. In Ohio, home education is an educational delivery that is directed by the parent or guardian. The parent or guardian chooses the curriculum and education materials and is responsible for the education of the child. Home education is outlined in section 3321.04 of the Ohio Revised Code.
The Perry-Hocking ESC provides home schooling notification processing services for residents of the Northern Local School District, Southern Local School District and Logan-Hocking School District. Our goal is to ensure that home educated children are being provided the required educational opportunities as stated in the Ohio Revised Code for students who are excused from compulsory attendance rules.
Download the Home Education Fact Sheet.
How do I notify? A Home Education Notification Form must be sent to the superintendent by the beginning of, or during, a school year. Notification must be sent each home schooling year.
See the Ohio Home Educators Network for more details about the Notification procedure.
Regulations OAC 3301-34 specify the information that must be provided.
In addition to the information provided on the Notification form, an annual assessment is required before the superintendent accepts notification of the intent to home educate during the next school year. Assessments can be through standardized achievement testing or as a written narrative from a certified teacher. See sample assessment forms Achievement Testing Assessment Form or Written Narrative Form.
