Local districts and PHESC use the SEMS to manage the assignment of substitute teachers.  This system is designed with many features:

 

Þ    The ability to be accessed 24 hours a day/7 days a week

Þ    Partial day absences selection reporting

Þ    The capability to choose a particular sub for a job

Þ    The capability for teachers to leave a voice message for the substitute

Þ    A PIN number assignment once registration is complete

 

The system is designed so that substitute teachers are able to designate the level and demographic area they are interested in working.  The system calls substitutes during these times:

 

                        Today’s Jobs                                                              Future Jobs

                        Weekdays        5:30 a.m.                                           5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

                        Saturdays        None                                                  None

                        Sundays           None                                                  5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

                        Holidays           None                                                  5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

HOW DO I BECOME A PHESC SUBSTITUTE TEACHER?

 

To become a certified substitute teacher please submit the following to the PHESC Administrative Office:

 

*     Complete a PHESC Certified Application

*     Copy of a current teaching certificate, or if you do not have a current teaching certificate, a current substitute teaching license (Click here to apply for a substitute teaching license.)

*     BCI & I criminal background check (current as of the last 12 months and sent to teacher certification at ODE). Click here for more information.

*     Copy of a negative TB test

*     Originaltranscripts from college indicating a Bachelor’s degree was conferred (this applies only if you are applying for a substitute teaching license)

*     Fill out the PHESC Preferred Location form (Click here)

*     Print off a “Substitute Quick Reference Guide” for the SEMS system (Click here)

*     Register as a “new substitute” on the SEMS system and receive a 6-digit PIN number

SUBSTITUTE AIDE/ATTENDANT?

 

To become a classified substitute teacher aide/attendant please submit the following to the PHESC Administrative Office:

 

*     Complete a PHESC Classified Application (Click here)

*     Apply for Substitute Aides Certificate (Click here )

*     BCI & I criminal background check (current as of the last 12 months and sent to teacher certification at ODE. Click here for more information.

*     Copy of negative TB test

*     Fill out the PHESC Preferred Location form (Click here)
