| Origin: | The GED has been accepted as an equivalent high school diploma for over 50 years. Adult Basic Education classes have existed for the purpose of teaching, reading and other basic academic skills to adults since the 1800's. Most recently, the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 has aligned the ABLE program with other family services to attempt to have more adults become literate. | |
