ABLE
Adult Basic and Literacy Education

Supervisor: This program falls under the general supervision of the superintendent
Purpose: The purpose of the ABLE program is to provide educational opportunities to adults who lack literacy skills, or who have not completed their high school classes.
Goals:
  • Assist adults to become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency.
  • Assist adults who are parents to obtain the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children.
  • Assist adults in the completion of secondary school education .

Strategies toward achieving goals:

  • Provide on a regular basis instruction in all levels of reading, writing, and math, from beginning through grade twelve.
  • Provide instruction in GED preparation to earn the High School Equivalency Diploma.
  • Provide information for parents to assist their children with homework.
  • Provide study materials for citizenship testing.
Deliverables:
  • Write and implement ABLE grant annually.
  • Provide classes, including orientation, for participants.
  • Complete all testing and reporting through the ABLELink system.
  • Participate in all meetings required by the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Schedule a yearly graduation ceremony for all successful GED participants.
Legislative Mandates: Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, Title II, the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Public Law 105-220
Origin: The GED has been accepted as an equivalent high school diploma for over 50 years. Adult Basic Education classes have existed for the purpose of teaching, reading and other basic academic skills to adults since the 1800's. Most recently, the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 has aligned the ABLE program with other family services to attempt to have more adults become literate.
