Gifted Identification in Ohio

by Peggy Clifford

In Ohio, children may be identified as talented and gifted in four main areas:

Superior Cognitive - IQ 130 or higher; ability

Specific Academic - High achievement in reading, writing, math, science, social studies

Creativity - Creative and outside the box in thinking; minimum 115 IQ

Visual and performing Arts - Music, art, dance, drama

Only 5 % of the population has an IQ that is 130 or above. Approximately 15% of the population will have an IQ that is 115. To find out whether or not your child is gifted, he or she must be assessed. ODE ( Ohio Department of Education)has approved a variety of test instruments that can be used to judge giftedness. In Perry County, we have several different tests that can measure intelligence and achievement. If you would like to have your child tested, contact me at the ESC (342-3502.)
