THINK History is a professional development program for grades 6-12 Social Studies Educators in southeastern Ohio. Funded through a Teaching American History grant from the United States Department of Education <link to USDOE program website: http://www.ed.gov/programs/teachinghistory/index.html>, this program brings together the resources of the Perry-Hocking Educational Resource Center, the Ohio Historical Society <link to OHS: http://www.ohiohistory.org/> and Ohio University <link to OU: http://www.ohio.edu/history/> to support and improve the teaching of traditional American history.
Each year, thirty-two teachers will have the opportunity to interact with OU faculty, OHS curators and archivists. Participants will visit historic sites and explore national, state and local history. School-year programs will consist of four Saturday seminars, a regional seminar at an OHS site and OU regional campus, and a research day at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. An intensive content-based residential Summer Institute at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus will follow the seminars in June.
THINK History participants will receive: (1) a stipend, (2) up to 3 graduate credits in American History from Ohio University, (3) free program materials including books and other media, (4) reimbursements for travel outside of the participant’s region, and (4) opportunities to interact with peers, professional historians and primary source material from the Ohio Historical Society’s collections.
